S.T.A.R. PLEDGE:
(Students
Taking an Active Role)
I am a Star. I make things better than they
are.
Where there is
darkness, I bring the light,
Just as sure as
day follows night, I am a Star.
I make things better than they are! I
am a STAR!
In Partnership is an after school enrichment
program for all students attending Brook Hill Elementary School.
Originally, began as an after-school enrichment program for fourth,
fifth and sixth grade children who lived in the South Park neighborhood of Santa Rosa, sponsored by the Gray Foundation.
In 1993, Sheri Graves, Ann Gray Byrd and Curtis
Byrd discussed the idea for an after school program for the children of
South Park with Gilbert Gray, Co-founder of the Gray Foundation, and Gary
Reeves, Principal, Brook Hill School.
A community effort involving some 50 corporations and businesses in Sonoma County and more than 60 individual volunteers were presented with a
partnership agreement, each partner was asked to sign.
In Partnership offered a comprehensive program
in reading, writing, math, homework assistance, study skills and a wide
range of other activities
In December 1996, the Active 20-30 Club hosted what
has become the annual Christmas party for In Partnership children. Since
1996 Active 20-30 has given each child at the party a bicycle, other gifts
and a visit from Santa Claus.
In 2000 the program was expanded to include
grades Kindergarten through sixth with the focus on computer skills. The first year in the new computer lab
students published a book, “STAR Students Taking an Active Role” utilizing
an on-line program of stories originally published in their newsletter
“South Park Kids Press” and photographs taken by the students.
Principal, Karen Arter, in the Spring of 2001,
requested that all students be taught touch typing. With the start of typing classes came the
Leaders In Training program. A program
to teach students teamwork and the development of leadership skills
culminating in the outstanding student receiving the Drew Jackson
leadership award at the annual Recognition Ceremony and their name is
placed on the perpetual plaque in the school library.
In Partnership is
open 2 days per week, on Tuesday and Thursday and has an enrollment of
100-110 students. Students continue
to learn basic typing skills in addition to team work and leadership.
